Lunch Break: Comfort Cuisine

Sampling dishes and diners in and around Miami County

I am completely aware that I have had a recent pattern of traveling to Asian restaurants lately. That being said, there is just no better cure for a dreary day. I have also been urged to try Troy’s fairly new restaurant, Speakeasy Miso, about a million times. So, I met a friend for some comfort food and modern vibes.

I’m not usually a fan of modern furniture or decorations in restaurants or coffee shops. Usually, I feel like it takes the pulse out of an establishment. However, Miso has a modern vibe that still booms with life and a semi-casual tone. I would not recommend the booth seating for a first date. I liked being close while conversing; however, if you choose a booth, they’re a little awkwardly shaped. Think of the last supper, where, for some reason, everyone is eating on the same side of the table.

The menu is great for trying new things, and also all things Crab Rangoon. I was almost set on the Cheesy Ramen until I saw an exciting twist on a comfort food classic I had to try. The Kimchi Grilled Cheese. This gooey sandwich layered with crunchy and spicy Kimchi and buttery Texas toast absolutely hit the spot. The spot being my soul. It also paired perfectly with waffle fries. As an added plus, I felt I could justify eating the most American and dense item on the menu by reminding myself that Kimchi is known for its immune system and inflammation benefits. I’m not sure if those still exist after being deliciously smooshed between cheese and bread, but I am choosing to believe they do.

The presentation wasn’t amazing since it’s literally a monochrome meal. However, I did happen to snap a picture of my friend's Sushi Roll, which was mouth-wateringly stacked with all of the Sushi goodies. It’s definitely on my list for when I go back. Her margarita was also adorable, so I think it kind of makes up for the grilled cheese being a little on the orange side.

The prices are a little high, but I'd say it was worth it due to Miso’s growing popularity, adorable downtown Troy location, and friendly staff. I’ll also never enjoy a grilled cheese as much, knowing it could be 10 times better with Kimchi. So I have Miso to thank for a new favorite spin on an old favorite sandwich. I only wish they had ranch to dip it in. Old habits die hard, I guess.

Speakeasy Miso is located at 101 West Main Street, Troy, OH, 45371.
