Lunch Break: A Taste of Summer

Sampling dishes and diners in and around Miami County

Although teachers and students are celebrating summer vacation, it can be hard for most to find the same excitement in just another passing season. Adulthood can sometimes, unfortunately, mean losing out on the summer fun. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. If you have the time on your lunch break and want to revive the tender feeling of a fun-packed summer between office hours, look no further than one town over. After visiting the local diner and drive-up, B-K Root Beer, located at 2780 Stone Circle Dr, Troy, I left feeling full of summer vibes and excitement.

The Troy root beer stand has an old-fashioned aura, with its quick drive-up option and lively inside dining. After stepping into the restaurant time machine, I was surprised the staff wasn’t on roller skates. That being said, they wouldn’t need roller skates to be quick. From a glance, it seemed like many of the friendly staff were high school and college kids, quick to serve and joyful in conversation. The attitude and theme of B-K create a joyful summery vibe, making it easy for customers to be nostalgic for barbeques, pool parties, and sleepaway camps.

After sitting in the vintage red chairs and taking in the checkered floors and Coca-Cola memorabilia, I glanced at the old-timey menu. The menu at B-K is made up of many tasty American dishes. Some options, like the Reuben hot dog, are bound to make your mouth water. However, as I was stopping in on my lunch break, I opted for the classic all-American cheeseburger. The thick cheeseburger was stacked with juicy pickles, crunchy onions, and all of the condiments that make a burger the perfect treat for a blistering hot day.

Accompanying the sandwich, I ordered the onion rings, which were perfectly fried and greasy, leaving a crunch to every savory bite. The cheese fries are a must-try as well. The crispy potato slices are generously topped with salt, pepper, and, of course, melted nacho cheese. After each bite, it felt mandatory to refresh my pallet with none other than a refreshing glass of B-K root beer.

If you can’t squeeze into the Root Beer stand in between meetings or errands, no worries. The little diner makes the perfect dinner spot for family night as well. You can even grab a brewski while the little ones finish off a gallon of the delicious B-K soda pop!

As the days get longer and the heat feels hotter, the best place to be is inside a cool diner, sipping on an icy drink and munching on summer treats. Troy’s beloved and popular B-K Root Beer stand is one of the best places to cool off on your lunch break during the upcoming dog days of summer.
