Recipe Box: Father’s Day favorites

Dylan and Jacob Beach know the key to the perfect Father’s Day, starting with breakfast. Spending time preparing food together is something that comes naturally for Evan, the father of two. The boys are their dad’s shadow when it comes to cooking.

“His favorite food has always been breakfast, so on the weekends, he always cooks a big breakfast, and the boys love to help. They crack the eggs and mix them. They help measure and pour ingredients to make pancakes or waffles and stir that up.” Christina, Evan’s wife and mother of their boys shared.

The boys love to help cut soft fruit like bananas for their mom’s favorite Banana Pancakes. When the family has breakfast for supper, they call it Brupper. The boys love to make foods like homemade pizza topped with funny designs and smiley faces with pepperoni. On Memorial Day weekend, Evan let Dylan help cook the peppers and onions on the stovetop for sausage and peppers, and Jacob stirred the dressing for a pasta salad dish.

Evan loves to grill. The boys help prepare some of the meals and take pride in keeping their dad company outside while he is grilling.

Evan has a cookbook that was given to him years ago by his late Grandmother, Nina. It was originally his grandfather, Pop’s book, who loved cooking for his family. The book, over 50 years old, was ahead of its time, encouraging men to cook for their families. Evan still likes to refer to it every once in a while. Evan’s father has always appreciated good food; Sunday dinners have always been a big deal for their family. That tradition has carried over to the new generation of Beach men. Evan and the boys cook brunch after church every Sunday and look forward to this time together as a family.

When COVID shut everything down, this allowed Evan to have space and time to explore cooking more complex meals, and he discovered a new love for preparing more challenging dishes.

For Christina, it’s heartwarming to see how patient Evan is with the boys. With Evan studying for his CPA exams, his time is limited, but somehow, he manages to prioritize being in the kitchen with his sons. Happy Father’s Day to all the men who invest time in their children, preparing them for their future. Cooking is for everyone who wants to make a meal while stirring up memories. Time is valuable; what recipe are you writing for your children? On Father’s Day, and every day, Evan’s favorite sidekicks in the kitchen are Dylan and Jacob, and I’m positive they feel the same about their dad.
