Recipe Box: Hall named Miami County 2024 Pork Queen 

Katelyn Hall of Fletcher goes hog wild for swine. Representing Miami County as the 2024 Pork Queen is just one of her many roles in the community. She ran for Queen as a desire to advocate for the Miami County Pork Industry and bring new ideas and information to those around the county. To Hall, being the Miami County Pork Queen means teaching younger girls that you can have a hiccup in your journey in life and still be able to rise above it. Better opportunities will come in the long run when you keep trying. 

As an AgVocate in Miami County and the swine industry in Midwest Ohio, Hall will help at the fair in the arena, handing out ribbons and trophies. For over eight years, Hall and her family have been breeding and raising show pigs. Hall’s accomplishments are nothing to snort at. 

She is currently the 2023 National Teen Runner-Up Miss Agriculture USA and the 2024 Indiana Teen Miss Agriculture USA. She will be competing at the end of June for the 2024 National Teen Miss Agriculture USA title. She has held a few different titles in the Miss Agriculture USA Organization. Katelyn was also the 2019 Miami County Pork Princess. She has been breeding and raising show pigs for eight years. Her favorite breed of pig is the Spot. Katelyn also has a love for Kunekune pigs. Hall is happy to experience another breed of pig this year and cannot wait to share him with others. 

She will be a senior next year at the Miami Valley CTC in the Veterinary Science Program. Her home school is Miami East, where she is a Varsity Cheerleader. She is in the FFA chapter at the Miami Valley CTC and just recently earned her State Degree. She has been a member of Girl Scouts for 12 years and 4-H for 11 years. 

Katelyn loves pulled pork. Add some spicy BBQ sauce to it, and she is in. However, if she has the chance to have some great pork chops, she will put soy sauce on them and enjoy them that way. 

Hall understands and values the importance of agriculture for our world. Along with her family, she takes pride in promoting the pork industry and educating others. Living high on the hog means being in the barn, working on her projects, and raising a quality product for the market.

Pulled Pork

Ingredients 

·         6 lbs boneless Pork Shoulder Chuck Roast (or 2 smaller roasts totaling 6-7 lbs)

·         1 large onion 

·         1 Tbsp salt 

·         1 tsp black pepper

·         1 tsp paprika 

·         1 cup chicken broth 

·         1 cup your favorite BBQ sauce

·         1 Tbsp liquid smoke, optional but nice

·         2 Tbsp Worcestershire 

·         3 large garlic cloves, pressed

·         2 Tbsp brown sugar 

Directions

1.     Chop 1 large onion and place it into the bottom of the slow cooker.

2.     Combine 1 Tbsp salt, 1 tsp pepper, and 1 tsp paprika and generously sprinkle the pork roast. Massage the roast to rub the seasoning into the meat. Place meat over the onions.

3.     For the marinade, combine 1 cup chicken broth, 1 cup BBQ sauce, 1 Tbsp liquid smoke, 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce, 2 Tbsp brown sugar, and 3 pressed garlic cloves. Stir to combine. Pour the marinade over the pork.

4.     Cover and set on low for 8 hours. Remove the meat to a large bowl and remove any fat. Shred with forks. Pour any drippings from the crockpot over the meat to taste then brush meat with warm barbecue sauce to serve.
