Table Salt: Soul soles

Between a very busy season for my family, I received a phone call from my church secretary. A family was in need of an officiant for a funeral. Two years had passed since I had last spoken at a funeral and I was feeling less than equipped. Asking for time to pray, I hung up the phone. I assured the secretary I would respond promptly. Isolating myself, I spent some time being still and quiet. What I felt God was saying certainly wasn’t what I wanted to do. It was summer, my daughters were showing livestock at the state and county fairs and the phone call came in the midst of it all. I wanted to say I was just too busy but God nudged me to obey His call. I reached out to the family, introduced myself and took down the address where I needed to meet them to plan the service. Scrambling to get myself together, I decided against wearing sandals, even though it was summer. My toenails were in dire need of care and time just didn’t allow. Shuffling through my shoes and clothes, I settled on a red and white polka-dotted top, white pants, and red Keds sneakers.

The entire drive I debated if I was dressed appropriately to greet the mourning family. Upon my arrival, the daughter of the man who passed away met me at the door, embracing me and welcoming me to their home. Nervous, but trusting God would give me the words He needed me to use, I was introduced to the deceased’s widow. She motioned for me to sit down. When I did, my eyes were drawn to her shoes. She was also wearing red sneakers, almost identical to mine! In the moment that I realized we were wearing the same red shoes, God’s peace rushed from my head to my soles. He shows up through unexpected places to meet our needs and equip us for His call.

Never doubt that God hasn’t paved a way ahead of any task that He asks you to complete. Our Lord knows what it’s like to walk in our shoes. He will wrap each step you take in His unfailing love. Walk in God’s word that is written for each one of us in scripture. He will prepare our souls for serving Him through each step our soles take.

“I will walk by faith even when I cannot see.” 2 Corinthians 5:7
