Table Salt: Plane projection

Boarding my first flight, my grandparents and I were traveling to Texas. Excited to meet my two-year-old twin cousins, I took the seat against the window. My grandma, who despised flying, stated she didn’t want me to sit by the window. “Let her alone,” my grandpa grumbled. He seemed to understand my curiosity and excitement.

Grandma proceeded to list the reasons I shouldn’t look out the window over the plane's wing. Grandpa and I let her words fly in one ear and out the other. Grandma settled in the center seat while Grandpa claimed the aisle. Take off rattled my grandma’s nerves. She squeezed my hand, pleading with me not to look out. The entire trip my grandma attempted to pilot my flight.

She packed an extra carry-on along, FEAR. My grandma carried heavy luggage, and she unpacked it onto me. If I encompassed her fear, my grandma would have felt more comfortable. From takeoff to landing, my grandma inadvertently projected her fear. She wasn’t aware of the example she was setting, fully engulfed in her reality. While my grandma would not intentionally want to load me up with her cargo, it happens naturally from one generation to the next.

Each one of us has power through Jesus Christ to pilot ourselves into a healthy future packed with lighter loads. When your baggage is too heavy for you, do you dump it on the ones you love, or do you lay it at your Heavenly Father’s feet?

You can sit in fear of what lies beneath the wing of the plane or gaze into the future, knowing that refuge is found under His wings.

“He will cover you with His feathers. He will shelter you with His wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” Psalm 91:4.
