Sampling dishes and diners in and around Miami County

If you’ve grown up in Tipp City or lived in town for a while, chances are you’ve experienced the delicious deal of Dollar Slider Night at Hickory River. I remember gathering with family after band concerts, sports, and even birthdays on Tuesday nights for two pulled pork sliders and mac and cheese. However, I hadn’t stopped into Hickory River in a while, and upon choosing to visit during lunch hours, I realized it might be the best deal in town.

Slider nights were one of my favorites growing up, not just because of Hickory River’s cute western theme and speedy cafeteria-style serving and sitting, but because the barbeque was just plain good. Now, as an adult, I can recognize how nice it is not to have to fight downtown traffic or search far and wide for a lunchtime parking spot.

If you hop into Hickory River during one of their lunch specials, you’re in for a good deal and a delicious bite. The mac and cheese was my favorite when I was younger because of its uniquely creamy consistency. That being said, for this lunch break, I broke out of my Hickory River comfort zone and ordered a classic pulled pork sandwich, coleslaw, and sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries were a dollar extra charge, but the crunchy, freshly fried, savory crinkle slices just couldn't be beaten. Not to mention, the upcharge still landed my meal under ten dollars, which is arguably way less than any fast food chain. That said, if I were in a rush, the takeout option is also still available. The pulled pork sandwich was even better than I had remembered. The tender, perfectly pulled meat was topped with a uniquely tangy mild sauce.

Personally, I’m a barbeque sauce hater, but something about Hickory River’s sauce makes it the only exception. It’s both sweet and tangy while also having the perfect runny texture. The same goes for their coleslaw. The fresh cabbage slaw is coated with a vinaigrette-like dressing that makes it stick out in a sea of sugary mayonnaise-coated competitors. It was delicious not only alone but as a sandwich topper, too. Every bite of my meal was packed with both flavor and Tippecanoe memories.

Hickory River is a restaurant everyone in Tipp City has tried and probably has come to love. If you’re like me and you haven't been in a while, I would make a trip. Somehow, the award-winning pulled pork has gotten even better over the years, and the lunchtime prices are unbeatable.
