Lunch Break: Hello BQ
Sampling dishes and diners in and around Miami County
Although this column is called Lunch Break, admittedly, I sometimes venture to restaurants with friends and fall into the dinner or breakfast time frame for eating. However, as I was all alone in between classes, I realized that there were plenty of places around me to try. Fairborn is home to many types of food, Mediterranean being one of the most popular. This week, the place closest to me, besides the Student Union, happened to be Baba BQ. Considering the student union snubbed me on salad toppings last week, I decided to journey the 0.9-mile distance, and it was absolutely worth it.
I love the setup of places like Chipotle and Hothead, or even Subway, where I get to pick what I want on my meal. However, so often, I leave feeling like I just committed the fifth deadly sin. Baba BQ was different. I created my bowl myself, but even if I had chosen every topping, it still would’ve been a fulfilling but not artery-clogging meal. I started with warm white rice, topped with the most delicious meat I’ve ever had. The Kafta Kebab meat is some sort of beef that is marinated and spiced with something magical. This, mixed with pickled cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, cheese, and my personal favorite (banana peppers), was deliciously fresh when garnished with a garlic aioli type of sauce.
I also really enjoyed the atmosphere of the place. BaBa BQ is by no means a cutesy diner or nostalgic mom-and-pop, but it is simple, and sometimes that's exactly what you need for a lunch break between studying for finals. Also, I wouldn’t go as far as to say it isn’t a mom-and-pop, as it is a small business. You can tell that it’s run by people who truly care about your eating experience. I was greeted immediately by the friendly staff, who made my bowl with a smile. For being less than a year old, the joint has the vibe that they just know what they're doing. I left feeling full but not lethargic and ready to take on emails, studying, and writing papers once again.
BaBa BQ might be my new frequent spot for Spring Semester, and if you’re in the Fairborn area, skip the never-ending chain of fast food places and stop in somewhere a little more authentic. You’ll definitely feel and taste a difference.
Baba BQ & Café is located at 2624 Colonel Glen Hwy, Fairborn.
