Table Salt: From the empty cup
When your feet hit the floor in the morning, what is the first thing that you have to do? A vast majority of people tell me they head directly to the bathroom! When you rise what do you have to have to start your day? Do you start out with a cup of coffee, a hot shower, quiet time with Jesus?
Blasted all over clothing, mugs, and rustic wall signs are the words, “But first Coffee.” Moms have popularized coffee as a way to survive another day with the kids. Those working long hours behind a desk use caffeine to cope with each day's tasks. Sipping coffee is marketed as the way to start your day and power through anything that life might throw in your path.
I am the first to admit that I enjoy a mug of iced coffee on a hot summer morning and even throughout the afternoon. As I continue to mature in my faith walk, I am learning that regardless of how much coffee I drink, I always feel empty and inadequate when the last drop is gone. We will never be able to feel accomplished, successful, or rested on coffee alone. We can fill our cup over and over throughout the day, but eventually, it will be empty.
To truly be filled, we must start our day with Jesus and carve out time each day to be in a relationship with Him. When your feet hit the floor in the morning, greet your Heavenly Father. As you pour your coffee, crack open your bible and begin filling your mind and soul with the scripture He created for us to live by.
When you scroll social media, scan the police blotter, or open the refrigerator, you won’t find fulfillment. You can search through the latest products, compete with the newest fashion trends, or sip all the coffee. But over and over, you’ll come up empty. When you fill yourself with conversation with Christ and memorize scripture to feed yourself, you will live life feeling full.
Your cup will never run dry, but will overflow. Wake up with Christ and feed yourself on His promises throughout the day. You will not find this kind of confidence and energy through anything on earth.
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” James 4:8
