Tipp with big sixth inning to defeat Xenia

For five innings, it was truly anyone's ballgame. Then in the sixth inning, Tippecanoe put the game away.

With a big seven-run sixth inning, the Red Devils remained unbeaten on the season with a 10-2 victory over Xenia in a MVL contest. It was a game that saw Tipp collect 11 hits in the game. Carson Jackson picked up the win in relief after the Red Devils broke a 2-2 tie and then capped off the scoring with their sixth inning.

“We expected it to be a gritty game,” Tipp coach Cameron Dickens said. “I thought Drew (Husic) threw the ball well. He didn’t have his sharpest stuff, but he is such a competitive kid.”

“We found a way to execute in spots where we needed it. But we made some mistakes with some stuff we definitely need to clean up. Every game in the MVL, you have to find ways to fight through.”

Tipp left the bases loaded in the opening inning, then filled them again in the second. Cayden McKinney drove home the first run of the game with a bases-loaded walk to give the home squad the early lead.

Another run crossed for Tipp in the third when Husic singled and moved up on an error. Ethan Harney then drove in a run when he reached on an error to give Tipp a 2-0 lead.

Xenia tied the game in the fifth before Tipp went back to work in their half of the inning. Jackson doubled to lead off the fifth and was moved over on a bunt. Husic then drove home the runner with a single to put the Red Devils back in front 3-2.

Then came the sixth inning, when the wheels fell for the Buccs.

Brady Lisky reached on an error with one out, stole second and moved up on a single from McKinney. Jackson then drove home a run with a single. Landon Muhlenkamp then singled in a run and Husic reached on an error, which plated another run,

Eli Kettel struck out, but during his at-bat, a run scored on an error by the catcher trying to pick off the runner at third. Harney then reached on a routine fly to right field what was errored to score a run, then Bruce Eckert doubled in a run. The scoring was completed with Preston Zumwalt singled in their seventh run of the inning.

“I thought our approach offensively was a little more simple in the sixth inning,” Dickens said. “We got some runners in motion, we executed and had a couple of breaks go our way.”
