Payton Mayfield qualifies for State Wrestling Tournament
The final weeks of wrestling approached quickly for Milton-Union's team, and four wrestlers were fighting to compete at the State Championships.
On March 1, Payton Mayfield, Ian Coffey, Seth Lowry, and Eli Deeter competed at the District Championships held at Hobart Arena in Troy.
In the earlier stages of the match, Mayfield was sitting at 2-0, Coffey 2-0, Lowry 0-2, and Deeter 1-1.
Lowry finished his junior season without the chance to compete another week, but the other three were still wrestling for District placement and continuation in their seasons.
With the final updates for the day, it was announced that Coffey placed fifth, which qualified him for state only as an alternate.
The same was true for Deeter. He has qualified for state as an alternate with a fifth place finish.
However, Mayfield has qualified once again for the State Championship in Columbus. He finished in third place overall at the District Championship.
Mayfield has been in this position in his wrestling career but has never finished where he wanted. With this being his senior season, the stakes are at an all time high.
He has been a standout athlete in his other sports as well. He has been to the State Championship for track and field many times, including last year, where he qualified in all four of his events, so this pressure isn’t new.
Mayfield was also named Buffalo Wild Wings Athlete of the Month for February. He went 15-2 in the regular season, won the Brookville Invitational, and placed second at the Troy and Eaton Invitationals.
He also placed first at the Three Rivers Conference (TRC) wrestling tournament and was named First-Team All TRC.
This has been another standout season for Mayfield, and he has made it the furthest you can go as a wrestler as he qualified for the State Championships.
