Table Salt: Through the gloom
I hauled wood out to the burn pile on a gloomy Friday afternoon. The sun briefly showed its face throughout the day. The clouds and gray sky definitely dominated the daylight hours. It felt like evening all day due to the heavy shade of the sky. I circled around the perimeter of the fence and faced the west as I neared the burn pile.
When I stopped to unload the wagon, the sun suddenly burst through the thick, colorless clouds. As dusk drew closer, I certainly wasn’t expecting to see the sun playing peek-a-boo with me. I slid my sunglasses out of my pocket and shielded my eyes. Though the sun was setting in the west, a small hole opened in the southwest sky. Surprised, a strip of a rainbow bowed out. It caught me off guard on this gloomy and unlikely day.
With no rain and a very minute amount of sunshine, I certainly wasn’t expecting to see a rainbow. You cannot tell from the black and white photo, but the hues of the rainbow were vibrant and rich. I stopped to snap a picture. Putting my phone back in my pocket, I stood in awe of the symbol in the sky. The rainbow proudly showed its face in the form of a sliver on a gloomy and dark day.
In the most unlikely place for a rainbow to shine, God showed off His goodness. If you’re still long enough, you can find the richness of God in the most unlikely places. It’s in the gloomy moments that God shines the brightest. Our Lord and Savior is never far away. He is always casting His light into our darkest days and moments. Are you waiting in expectation for His rainbow to burst through your gloom? Be on guard, awake, and alert. Scan your surroundings for the rainbow. God’s promises are most likely to be seen and felt on the unlikely days and in moments of darkness.
Genesis 9:13 says, "I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.”
