Tipp girls with big win over Troy
Many people thought it would only be a matter of time before the game would become a mercy-rule running clock game when the Tippecanoe girls basketball team traveled to Troy for a MVL matchup last week.
Midway through the third period, the premonition came to life.
The Red Devils reached the 35-point plateau with four minutes left in the third quarter and never looked back, cruising to a 58-22 drubbing of the Trojans to improve to 8-3 in the MVL and 10-4 overall. Troy dropped to 2-11 on the season.
“Troy plays really hard, they are a good defensive team. They play with a lot of pride and passion,” Tipp coach Julian Grasso said after Tipp got off to a bit of a slow start. “They give their best effort. We got going by sharing the ball, being unselfish, and having some great team plays for each other, which kind of got us going.”
The Trojans kept the game close through the entire first period. There were several lead changes before the Red Devils closed out the quarter with a 8-2 run behind Macey Griffin and Mady Turner.
Tipp began taking control of the game in the second period by shutting down the Troy offense, holding them to two points in the quarter while extending their lead.
Morgan Sessions was a key contributor in the first four minutes of the quarter by dropping a pair of big three’s. Liv Hiser added three points to help pad their lead. Abbi Mader added six points in the final 3:27 to increase the Tipp lead to 38-11 at the half.
“Morgan stays patient with her game and she is a great shooter,” Grasso said. “We trust her, and she will go in and continue to have a great season. She understands that in some games she will play a big role, other games maybe not as much but that is how we play at Tipp. We play unselfish and trust each other.”
“Abbi plays so hard and plays with a great attitude,” he added. “She is a driven and motivated player, and she just wants to win.”
Mader led everyone with 19 points for Tipp, Hiser and Sessions each scored seven while scoring six apiece were Griffin, Ella Combs, and Emily Aselage.
