Tipp Tennis Team wins MVL tennis title

Tipp survives thriller 25-22

It was another successful Miami Valley League girls tennis tournament for the Tippecanoe Red Devils, as they claimed another MVL title with a win at the league tournament last week.

Not only did they win the conference tournament, but they also finished atop of the league standings.

At first singles Eleanor Spangler played some of the best tennis she had played this season, setting up points and putting them away with more consistently.

“She came out on fire playing against Greenville first singles Riley Capasso and quickly collected a 8-0 win,” Tipp coach Jack Romer said. Her second match could be considered for match of the day Coach Romer said as she battled back from being down 2-5 to tie it at 6-6 to finishing it 8-6 against a tough singles player from Butler in Hannah Faulkner.

In the finals she once again faced a deficit and tried to climb out of it but fell just short losing to Nina Short from Troy 8-6.

“Eleanor battled several players that are seeded at their respective sectional tournaments, and this should give her great momentum as the number three seed at sectional (this week) at Troy,” Romer said.

Bre Kovaleski started her day playing against Stebbins second singles player and cruised to a 8-1 win in a quick and easy win.

“Bre has battled in some tough matches all season and has come out on top in most of them, and her second match was another good win beating Fairborn 8-4 in a match that was closer than the final results show,” Romer said. In the Finals after a long day she battled against a very good Butler player dropping the championship match 8-3.

Jillian Schroeder was the number one seed at 3rd singles and proved her seeding correct, winning her bracket.

In her first match against Stebbins put aside her miscues to earn a 8-4 win against Stebbins. In her second match she also battled throughout her match against Greenville to earn another 8-4 win.

“She battled out some of these games to get to the championship,” Romer said. “She just kept working hard and never gave up on a game or match.”

In the championship match going up against a solid Troy opponent she prevailed 8-5 to be the MVL third-singles champion.

Mary Waibel and Ameila Wiggerhaus also got their revenge at first doubles.

In their first match, the Tipp duo played Xenia and closed out 8-2 as the number three seed to start their day.

“You could tell they were locked in from the start as they all talked about getting revenge on Butler and Troy when they dropped tough three set matches to them (earlier in the season),” Romer said.

Their first swing at revenge would come in the semi-finals when they took on Troy’s first doubles team. Going back and forth the whole match Wiggershaus/Waibel came out on top winning 9-7 to advance to the finals.

In the finals they took on the other team they dropped a match to in the league in Butler who was the number one seed at first doubles. After dropping down 4-1 in the set they strung together seven straight games to defeat Butler and become MVL champions.

Handling the second doubles for Tipp, Eve McCormick and Sydney LaBreck dominated Piqua 8-1 in 35 minutes, before heading into the semis and shutout the Skyhawks 8-0.

In the final match of the day for the team against Butler they controlled the whole match and battled to earn a nice 8-4 win to become second Doubles champions in the MVL.
