Tipp sweeps Piqua on Senior Night
Three seniors for the Tippecanoe girls tennis team were honored on Senior Night as the Red Devils cruised past Piqua at the middle school courts last week.
Ameila Wiggershaus, Maya Beam, and Audrey Kinninger were recognized as the seniors on the Tipp squad as the Red Devils only lost five sets on the day.
With the win, Tipp moves to 8-5 on the season and stays unbeaten in the league on the season.
“Senior Amelia Wiggershaus and her partner Mary Waibel have stepped into the first doubles spot, battling tough opponents to the very end and winning against some of the harder opponents,” coach Jack Romer noted. “They started about two weeks ago playing together and have thrived together, bringing the energy every match.”
“Seniors Maya Beam and Audrey Kinninger got their first opportunity to play together on the top varsity team and looked comfortable,” Romer added. “They went out and won the first set in a blink of an eye.”
“It was a quick, easy win for them as they continued their strong run playing doubles. They have been playing together all season and you can really tell that they know what each other will do. It helps them win matches.”
Eleanor Spangler won at first singles 6-0, 6-1, while Bre Kovaleski also won at second singles 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Jillian Schroeder shut out her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.
Wiggershaus and Waibel won 6-0 6-1 at first doubles and, at second doubles, Beam and Kinninger cruised 6-1, 6-0.
On the season, Coach Romer has been proud of how his team has battled some tough opponents and won some of those tough matches.
“Going up to Eaton and winning 3-2 was a statement win for the season,” he said. “I’m very pleased with how much better every player has grown and gotten better as the season progresses. We are a completely different team now than we were a month ago or even 2 weeks ago. That growth has really allowed us to build some great depth of players that can contribute to this team if they are called upon.”
*Tipp also defeated Sidney 5-0 while falling to Alter in a non-conference matchup 3-2 last week.
