Tipp earns big non-league win over Bolts

A very solid first half of play helped lead the Tipp boys soccer team to a big 4-2 home victory over Northmont in a challenging non-conference matchup at the Tipp Park. With the win, the Red Devils moved to 6-2-2 overall and now head into a stretch where they can work on parts of their game to prepare them for a long tournament run.

“I am proud of our efforts and execution against a solid Northmont team,” Tipp coach Joel Slyman said. “We now have three games in a three week span. So, it’s good to really go back to practicing and consistently working hard to continue our momentum heading into the final third of our season.”

Tipp dominated the opening 40 minutes, peppering the T-Bolts with shots that eventually led to a 3-0 lead at the break.

Dominic Mendiola found Landon Haas and just missed less than two minutes into the game. But this led to what would be a big half for those two.

Colin Turner just missed left at 36:15. One minute later, Haas had a great 30-yard shot that headed to the corner and just missed as the Red Devils kept the pressure on Northmont.

With 29:54 left in the half, Haas hit a floater past the keeper to give Tipp a 1-0 lead. Then came the goal that really showed the workings of great teamwork when Cameron Smith connected with Mendiola with a great pass, and Mendiola took it and scored to make it 2-0.

“The Dom goal, our second goal, was exactly what we practice and it was fulfilling to see it happen in the game,” Slyman said. “Cameron made a nice play down the end line and slotted it back to Dom for a beautiful finish. Guys are continuing to buy into what we are trying to accomplish, and they are seeing the fruits of their labor in games.”

AJ Jergens rounded out the scoring in the first half, scoring off a long pass from Haas to make it 3-0 at the break.

“The first half last night was probably one of our better halves we have played all season,” Slyman said. “We came ready to play and we capitalized on our opportunities. It's one win and one game, but we saw a lot of nice things.”

Tipp added a goal in the second half from Haas.

Also last week, Tipp defeated West Carrollton 8-0 as six different Red Devils found the net.
