Sellers qualifies for state track meet

The special year continues for Tippecanoe sophomore Trey Sellers. On the biggest stage to date, Sellers delivered with a second-place finish at regionals in the boys high jump at 6’ 3” to advance to the Division One state track meet this weekend at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.

Tipp had several athletes compete in the regionals last week. The 4x8 girls relay team placed 14th overall to end their season with a time of 10:25.95, as Leda Anderson, Lucia Ranly, Gracie Wead, and Isabelle Mahl competed in that event for the Red Devils.

Also on Wednesday, Gavin Newburg competed in the boys discus, where he placed ninth overall with a throw of 146’. The top four finishers at regionals qualify for the state meet in each event.

Will Strong placed sixth in the boys long jump with a leap of 21’ 4.5”.

Running the girls 1600 run was Tipp’s Leda Anderson as she finished tenth overall with a time of 5:42.61, and her teammate Gracie Wead was 14th with a 6:38.30.

Another school record was broken by the Tipp 4x1 team of Julia Burgbacher, Alissa Magato, Hayley Tandy, and Megan Strong as they ran 49.88, placing them eighth overall. While they did not advance to state, they did set a new mark to go after again next season. Three of those four will be back.

In the boys 4x1 relay, Tipp ran to a tenth-place finish with a time of 43.09 behind the running of Cael Liette, Will Strong, Christian Couch, and Ethan Couch.  Like the girls, three of those four will return next year with a goal to achieve.

Magato came back in the girls 400 run, finishing the race in 1:00.08 and placing tenth. Tandy also competed in the girls 300 Hurdles, running 48.85 to place her 14th overall in the region.

Competing in the boys 300 Hurdles was Tipp’s Lucas Merry who did score Tipp a point with his eighth-place finish, running 40.34.

Tipp had two runners in the girls 800, as Ranly placed 15th overall with 2:26.62 and Anderson was 16th at 2:28.77.

The final girls running event was the 4x8 relay that placed sixth overall with a time of 4:03.59, about seven seconds off the state qualifying time. Running for the Red Devils was Magato, Briley Barton, Chelsea Dettwiller-Tiley and Brynna Campbell. The boys 4x8 team of Grant Titley, Zane Fowler, Christian Couch and Landon Luginbuhl were 14th overall with 3:30.83.

Barton came back in the girls long jump and placed 16th overall with 16’ 3”.

Sellers will compete in the Division One high jump at 2pm on Saturday in Dayton.
