40 Years of Memories: 40 down, hopefully many more to go!

As I close out this series looking back at four decades of basketball in my life, I just have to thank everyone who has been there to support me along the way. Back when I first got started and nobody cared about the sport, I was given the motivation that I would never last because nobody watches girls sports.

Now, 40 years later, you would be hard pressed to find a mens game that would outdraw watching an Iowa womens game on TV. The numbers prove that.

But the high school side is still evolving. While there are a lot more “media” outlets out there now, and I use that term loosely, many more eyes are on the sport.

I truly hope to get ten more years out of what I love. My time in the gym is therapeutic as it keeps me on track with everyday life issues. They say basketball is an escape for a lot of players, and the same can be said for me. Walking into the gym and seeing familiar faces is amazing. I have reconnected with so many former players over the last few years.

When I started writing a book (which is still in process…), it allowed me to realize how important this game has been to me.

It was so calming to spend last weekend sitting courtside at UD Arena, watching the supporting the girls basketball state final four. The ironic thing was how many familiar faces sought me out to catch up on life. Former players and coaches truly make it feel like a fraternity, reminding me that the basketball world is truly connected together.

Going forward, I have slowed down with my involvement in the game as I get older. Let’s be real, it does take a bit longer to recover from those long weekends in the gym. But the cool thing is, making a difference keeps me going to provide the best coverage in Ohio.

It is now time to turn our focus to spring sports and hopefully better weather. I do appreciate those of you who have commented to me at the Tipp games how much you enjoyed reading about the former players. After a little time off, it will be time to get back to preparing for the November event.

The stars will be out and the celebration will be going full force. The 40th season begins now!
