Volleyball squad opens with easy victory
Coming off a regular season finale loss at Versailles, the Tipp volleyball team refocused on what sits ahead of them. Tipp cruised past West Carrollton 25-6, 25-8, 25-7 in less than an hour to advance to the second round of the OHSAA Division 3 sectional tournament at Fairborn on Saturday.
With the win, Tipp advanced to play Greenville last night back at Fairborn, and a win will send them to the district finals on Saturday at a site TBA.
“The thing we really stressed today was being able to control the ball especially on free balls and down balls,” Tippecanoe coach Howard Garcia said following the match.
“We know we are a very offensive team so the question is if we can control the first contact and do it well, we know we will have a good outcome.”
Tipp didn’t waste any time settling into the match, opening up a 4-4 score in the first set to a 12-4 lead thanks to seven straight service points from Faith Siefring, and Tipp never looked back.
Savannah Clawson finished the match with 13 consecutive service points to cap off a 25-6 win for Tipp.
Siefring put together another big stretch in the second set, reeling off ten points to give Tipp an 11-0 lead before the Pirates could break serve. Ava Jones and Genna Kinsman each put together a good run to allow the Red Devils to open an insurmountable 19-3 lead enroute to a 25-8 set victory.
Set three was much of the same with Tipp jumping out to a 10-1 lead behind Jenna Krimm and Kinsman, then a five-point run by Abby Mader ended any chance of a West Carrollton comeback victory.
Leading the way for Tipp was Clawson with nine kills, four aces and ten digs, Emily Aselage added eight kills, ten digs while Siefring also had ten digs and four aces.
Krimm led Tipp with 18 assists, Bri Morris had six and Emily Richardson dished out five.
Other key stats in the game included four kills and two blocks from Livia Hiser, Mader also had four kills and Courtney Post had three.
“The Versailles loss was a good match to see where we are under pressure,” Garcia said when asked about the loss helping this team going forward. “Our job is to be able to assure ourselves we can handle the tougher teams in the tournament.”
