Tipp girls defeat Alter in home opener 23-0
Sevens were the lucky number last Friday as the Tippecanoe softball team played their first home game of the season, cruising past Alter 23-0. They remain unbeaten on the season and still have not given up a run this season.
Tipp scored seven runs in the first, second and fourth innings to pace the attack, and Jaina Drum picked up the win on the mound.
“We came out and dictated the game with what we needed to do,” Tipp coach Charles Tackett said. “Pitching was solid with no walks. They had a couple of bloop hits, but the pitching has been solid all year. We have also been playing solid defense. Our girls have been doing their job of being consistent and we are putting the bat on the ball.”
Tipp opened the game with a seven spot in the first. Emily Aselage reached on an error trying to bunt Abby Chaney up, then both runners came into score on a single from Kyla Fry, A walk to Ella Henn followed by another sacrifice attempt from Rylan Elms turned into another error to score Aubrey Davis to make it 3-0.
Abby Martin then drove in two runs with a double and ensuing error. Gracie Raiff tripled in the seventh run of the inning, and Tipp was off and running.
Fry singled in Chaney and Aselage to start the seven-run second inning, and Elms doubled in Davis to make it 10-0. Martin singled in another run, then Raiff singled to score Drum. Martin scored on the throw to push the Tipp lead to 13-0. Aselage struck again with a single to bring home Raiff and the Red Devils were comfortably on their way to a run-rule game.
Tipp scored twice in the third before exploding for another seven run inning, starting with Roo Snell’s single to score Chaney to make it 17-0. Jocelyn Shelton tripled in a pair of runs and Elms scored her to give the Red Devils a 20-0 lead.
Tipp finished with 19 hits on the day, including three each from Chaney, Elms and Martin.
“It was a good team win overall, but we have more work to do,” Tackett said. “I don’t want them to be satisfied with beating them 23-0.”
“We have to make sure we understand what we are doing here at all times. We can’t take any play lightly, every play matters. You can’t take a pitch or at-bat off.”
