Tipp remains unbeaten after win over Greenville
Adversity is something the Tippecanoe baseball team has not had to face this season. As things spiraled apart in the fifth for Tipp, they watched as Greenville scored seven times to turn a three-run deficit into a four-run lead.
The Red Devils then went to work. Tipp scored four times in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. They then scored the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh to escape with an 8-7 victory over Greenville to remain unbeaten on the season. They needed that win to stay even with a very hot Butler team who is also unbeaten on the season.
“It was big tonight, especially to be able to take a punch and adversity for the first time in the regular season when they put up the seven spot in the fifth inning. But to immediately answer back with a big inning is huge,” Tipp coach Cameron Dickens said. “It shows the mentality of the team and where we are at.”
“They expect to go out and win these games and are very confident in their abilities. There was no panic and we believed in what we have. You never want to make it that interesting, but I think we grew tonight.”
Tipp scored first in the third inning when Cayden McKinney hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Red Devils the early lead. Tipp added two more in the fourth as Ethan Harney reached on an error to bring home a run and he came into score later in a passed ball to give the Red Devils a 3-0 lead.
Greenville scored seven times in the fifth to take the lead but the Red Devils didn’t sweat. McKinney walked to lead off the bottom of the fifth, Landon Muhlenkamp then was hit by a pitch and Brady Liskey singled to load the bases. After one out, James Merry singled to bring home a run and Harney doubled in three runs and just that quick, Tipp tied the game at 7-7.
In the bottom of the seventh, Merry and Harney walked and both moved up allowing Eckert a chance to single in a run, giving Tipp the win.
“We were really patient and took what we got,” Dickens said. “We took a couple of walks then Bryce has been great for us all year. He has really turned the corner and came up big for us.”
