2024 Year in Review, January

Council approves Gateway Interchange Beautification  

After years of discussion, at the December 4, 2023 meeting, City Council voted to move forward with the Main St./I75 Gateway Interchange Project. The final design includes brick pavers, low maintenance plantings, and signs. The plan was then submitted and approved by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

Grounds for Pleasure Coffeehouse closed

Grounds for Pleasure Coffeehouse, located at 115 E Main St. in downtown Tipp City, closed its doors on December 30 and reopened in January under new management.

Hanrahan wins prestigious Findlay wrestling event

She began her season ranked #1 in the state in her weight class. Tippecanoe senior Emma Hanrahan progressed through the season and eyed the ultimate prize in Columbus in early March.

Newly-elected council members sworn-in

Sworn in at the January 8 council meeting were Kathryn Huffman, John Kessler, and Logan Rogers, all elected by Tipp citizens in November 2023. Council re-elected Kathryn Huffman as President and elected newly sworn-in Logan Rogers as Mayor.

Council passed an ordinance to annex a tract of land into Tipp City’s corporate limits. The property, located at 1400 W. Main Street, is the former Tipp Florist site and was purchased by the city on September 18, 2023.

Tipp City School Board welcomed new members

Tipp City Board of Education welcomed and officially swore in the three newly elected Board members: Cynthia (Cindy) Dillard, Angela (Angie) McMurry, and Kyle Thompson. The full Board then elected existing members Amber Dunn as Board President and Rick Mains as Vice-President.

Tipp City Schools treasurer David Stevens was named a Regional Distinguished Service Award winner by the Ohio Association of School Business Officials (OASBO). He was then honored at the April OASBO 2024 Annual Conference & Expo.

Tipp Seniors partied for New Year’s

The Tipp City Seniors celebrated New Year’s Eve with a party at their Center. Tom from Absolute Audio DJ Services provided the music and karaoke for the evening while the members sang and danced. They also played trivia and various games and cards. Their newly renovated Event Room provided plenty of space for the party.

Tipp church celebrated many victories

Victory Church marked its one-year anniversary at its new facility. Ground was broken at the 4645 S. County Rd. 25A church in the fall of 2021.

Council began approval for Summit Landing Subdivision, Section 1

At its January 8 meeting, Council approved the construction agreement for Summit Landing Subdivision. The Peters Rd. 24 lots were configured as single-family homes.

Plans submitted to the city on March 1, 2022, show a planned total of up to 172 homes built in phases along with seven lots set aside for green space. Plans also show road connections to the south into the Windmere subdivision.

LifeWise expanded to Broadway Elementary

The LifeWise Bible-based education program grew in the Tipp City schools with the addition of sessions for second and third graders at Broadway Elementary School.

Bethel Township elects first all-female trustee board

Bethel Township has a historic first for Miami County with the swearing-in at their January 2 Workshop of Kama Dick, the newly elected Township Trustee. The township is the first in Miami County with an all-female trustee board. Trustee President Julie Reese swore in Dick, as well as new fiscal officer Rhonda Ross. Also serving as Bethel Township Trustee is Beth van Haaren. Both van Haaren and Reese terms expire on December 31, 2025.

Ex-deputy elections director sentenced in forgery case

Miami County’s former Deputy Elections Director Ian Ridgeway was sentenced Jan. 11 to up to five years of community control for felony forgery of an invoice for election supplies.

Tipp boys soccer team honored

The 2023 Ohio Division Two state champion team was recognized for their fall accomplishments. The team members received plaques for their state championship, and the latest banner was unveiled in the gymnasium. The Red Devils ended their 2023 season with a 22-1-1 record, with their only loss at Summit Country Day.

Proposed coffee shop pulled out of Tipp City

Heavenly Grounds Coffee, a Mississippi business that intended to take over the former Grounds for Pleasure coffee shop, has pulled out of its purchase. The owners stated on Instagram that “circumstances came up through the demo of the coffee shop … we ran across some things that are going to make it impossible for us to open.”

Tippecanoe High School student literary magazine earns prestigious award

The Tippecanoe High School student literary magazine Inferno was recognized as a REALM First Class magazine by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).

Public records group sued Tipp City schools

An organization that works for transparency in government has filed legal action against the Tipp City Schools Board of Education, alleging the board violated the state’s Open Meetings Act. Open Government Advocates and Brian Ames of Mogadore, Ohio, filed the complaint in Miami County Common Pleas Court against the Board of Education and members in 2023, including Amber Drum, Richard Mains Sr., Theresa Dunaway, and Anne Zakkour.

Moran answered questions on goals, deficits, and new PK-8 building

Superintendent Aaron Moran met with Tipp citizens at the coffee shop in the Ginghamsburg Church on Friday, Jan. 26, to answer questions and discuss school issues.

DTCP held annual meeting, businesses honored for contributions to downtown

Downtown Tipp City Partnership (DTCP) held their annual meeting at Tipp Center. Art Chin provided dinner. Board Chair Chris Snider reviewed DTCP’s purpose and the past year’s accomplishments.

NorthPoint Development backed out of building warehouse

Land located north of Evanston Road between Interstate 75 and County Road 25A is back on the market after NorthPoint Development notified city leaders it won’t go forward with a plan to build more than one million square feet of space for warehouse type buildings.
