Remembering Carson Robbins
It has been almost a year since Carson Robbins died following a brief but debilitating seizure condition. His death came last April, just a week before his 18th birthday. The Tippecanoe High School senior was a scholar athlete, a football player, and a wrestler. He was also a brother, a son, and a friend.
Locals prepare for total eclipse on April 8
On Monday, April 8, look to the skies to enjoy one of nature’s rarest phenomena, a total solar eclipse. This area of darkness, known as “totality,” will pass over the Dayton area on Monday afternoon around 3:18 p.m. Dayton will be one of the top 12 larger towns in the United States to view the event, assuming the weather is clear that day.
Superintendent Moran recommends elimination of 18 staff positions
At the April 2nd Board of Education Study Session, Superintendent Aaron Moran recommended that the Tipp schools’ $2.5 million deficit be dealt with by eliminating 18½ certified staff members, two administrators, and six classified employees. He would also be reducing his salary by $10,000 and closing (“shutter”) Nevin Coppock Elementary School immediately after the school year.
Decades-old “Gravel Pit” murder cold case solved
The Miami County Sheriff’s Office has closed the investigation into the 1964 homicide of Daisy Shelton, whose body parts were found in the Tipp City area. Shelton, 43, of Dayton, was believed killed in Dayton before being dismembered and body parts disposed of in a gravel pit and a channel of the old Miami Erie Canal. Shelton’s murder was investigated in June 1964 after a fisherman pulled a severed arm from the gravel pit on State Route 571. Four days later, another man fishing found a bag containing a dismembered torso, and, later, a head and leg were found, all in the canal.
Seven candidates identified for city manager position
Seven people who are the candidates for city manager in Tipp City have been identified. Two candidates are current city employees, while one is a former city manager. The new city manager will replace retiring Tim Eggleston. A closed executive session meeting where candidates will be interviewed has been scheduled for April 10.
Local law enforcement recognized at annual awards ceremony
Miami County Law Enforcement agencies gathered on April 2 at Troy’s Arbogast Performing Arts Center for the Ninth Annual Law Enforcement Awards Ceremony. Tipp City officer Seth Victor was recognized.
Schools recognized their best teachers and support staff
On Friday evening, March 22, Tipp City Schools held its first annual Educator Awards ceremony. The purpose of the Awards and Awards Ceremony was to recognize individuals who exemplify a commitment to delivering excellence at Tipp City Schools and highlight educators and support workers whose efforts have had a positive impact. Teachers were nominated by their peers.
Total eclipse amazed and thrilled locals, no issues reported
On Monday, April 8, a total eclipse of the sun crossed over the Dayton area delighting skywatchers with a once in-a-lifetime display. Gatherings took place in Tipp, Troy, West Milton, Piqua, and downtown Dayton, including a large gathering at the Air Force Museum, where they planned for upwards of 30,000 guests.
Troy doctor accused of manufacturing or possessing explosives
A Troy man has been accused of manufacturing or possessing an explosive device, court documents revealed. Steven Werling, of 1434 Barnhart Road in Concord Township, Ohio, near Troy, was arrested Thursday, April 4, following an FBI investigation at that address and near a self-storage unit on East Monument Avenue between Keowee and Taylor streets in Dayton. Ohio requires a certificate of registration or permit to manufacture or possess explosives.
Logan Rogers reflects on his love for the city and arts
Logan Rogers has always viewed Tipp City as a special place. With that in mind, he couldn’t be more pleased to serve as the city’s mayor following a vote by fellow council members in January. “It seems like people who live here think it is special. People who come here think it is special. Growth and change are inevitable, but we need to stay special,” he said.
Toy store moved location in Tipp, opening store in Greenville
“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” That’s a cliché. But it’s also exactly what Cathi Hall did when she found out her retail space was going to be cut in half. Cathi owns Topsy Turvy Toys. She’s had a store in New Bremen since 2007 and one in downtown Tipp City since 2018.
Council discussed candidates for city manager position
Tipp City Council Members held two consecutive executive sessions in the Council conference room on Monday, April 15, starting at 6:30 p.m. The first Executive Session was convened to discuss candidates who had applied for the City Manager position.
Tipp’s Block Party brought community together
On April 6, the heart of Tipp City beat a little louder, and its streets hummed with the joy of community spirit during the much-anticipated block party. Organized by the Downtown Tipp City Partnership (DTCP) in collaboration with the Tipp City Chamber of Commerce and the Tipp City Public Library, this event was a testament to the power of unity and the charm of small-town living.
LT Ball Intermediate School STEM Club launch rockets
L.T. Ball Intermediate School students launched rockets 200 feet or more into the sky on Thursday afternoon, April 18. Students put into actual practice what they had learned in the classroom about combustion, force, motion, and gravity.
Thunder Forge Gaming opened in downtown Tipp City
Children and adults alike slide through their days with eyes glued to phones, TVs, and laptops. Most of us don’t like this. But one person in Tipp City is doing something about it. His name is Thomas Burton, and he’s opened Thunder Forge Gaming in downtown Tipp. Thunder Forge is a shop where you can buy, build, paint, and play a wide range of board, card, and tabletop games.
Deadline for stabilization repairs met on Troy building, street reopened
A deadline for stabilization repairs to the 112-118 W. Main St. building in Troy’s downtown historic district was met, and the street in front of the building reopened to traffic early Friday, April 19. The street was then closed to create a collapse zone between Cherry and Plum Streets by the city and had remained blocked for 10 months.
Local artists honored at Fine Art Exhibition
Evelyn Staub and George Stum were announced as the Glass Brush Award recipients. This award has been created to acknowledge individuals who have had a significant influence in making Tipp City a viable art community.
Big donation at West Milton Village Council meeting
The Village Council of West Milton has pledged a donation of $10,000 in their meeting on Tuesday, April 9. The donation, which was unanimously approved by the present council members, will go towards the Fourth of July celebration West Milton will hold later this year in the form of a fantastic fireworks display.
