Red Devils fall to Oakwood 4-2

It was a tough non-conference girls soccer matchup last week at the Tipp City Park, as Tippecanoe ran into a talented Oakwood team coming in with three consecutive losses.

The Jills controlled the game and handed Tipp their first loss of the season 4-2 to drop the Red Devils to 7-1-1 on the season.

“Oakwood was the better team in those 80 minutes, no doubt,” Tipp coach Brent Palmer said. “We will have to take a hard look at our performance and what we did on the field, but they were better tonight.”

“We had a lot of mistakes; we didn’t really feel like we were in it from the start. We did get the early goal but it wasn’t good enough from our end.”

Tipp nearly got on the board in the opening five minutes when Mady Turner connected on a shot that was deflected away from the Oakwood keeper to keep the game scoreless. Another big scoring chance happened at 24:04 when Tipp’s scoring leader Brooke Shafer nearly slid one past the keeper.

At 11:44 of the first half, Kenzie Curry put the Red Devils on the board when she knocked one in from 15 yards out to give Tipp a 1-0 lead.

Oakwood answered with two goals in the final four minutes of the first half. Their second goal that broke the tie occurred with 12 seconds left in the first half.

It was quickly 3-1 to start the second half when they found the net just 35 seconds into the final 40 minutes and Oakwood increased their lead to 3-1.

The Jills made it 4-1 with 13:25 left in the game before Tipp closed out the scoring when Shafer scored at 8:11.

“We gave up two pretty weak goals in the first half off of corner kicks, you would think you could deal with those a little bit better, Palmer said. “Those are deflating. The goal we gave up at the start of the second half knocked the wind out of us. We didn’t have enough to respond to that.”

Tipp also hosted Summit Country Day on Saturday. Girls lost to Summit Country Day 2-1.
