Tipp girls open with pair of wins

As the season got underway for the Tippecanoe girls soccer team, they would have a pair of challenging games to begin the 2024 campaign.

On opening night, the Red Devils traveled to Fairmont to battle the Division One Firebirds, and the Red Devils defense stood tall.

Tipp held Fairmont to only one goal as they knocked off the host Firebirds 2-1 to set the tone early in the season. Brooke Shafer and Mady Turner each picked up goals for the Red Devils and goalie Rachel Vaughn recorded five saves and allowed just the one goal to help Tipp earn the huge non-conference victory.

Shafer also picked up the assist on Turner’s goal, while the other assist came from Kendall Davis as she found Shafer.

Also last week, the Red Devils had a tough league opener hosting Troy and controlled the majority of the game for a 4-1 victory. The Red Devils scored twice in each half while the Trojans scored a late goal in the final eight minutes to spoil the shutout.

After both teams looked to establish control of the game early, Tipp’s first shot came ten minutes into the game when Kenzie Curry saw her shot saved by the Trojans keeper.

Early in the game, Troy turned away everything Tipp was throwing at them until the Red Devils struck toward the end of the half.

With 3:10 left in the first 40 minutes, Shafer struck on a 20-yard shot that found its way past the keeper into the corner of the net, giving Tipp a 1-0 lead.

The Red Devils didn’t waste much time adding to their lead, as just over two minutes later Davis added a long range shot from 25-yards out, giving Tipp a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

Shafer left her mark again with a header off a corner kick from Biz Stallard with 28:59 left in the game to give the host Red Devils a 3-0 lead.

Tipp wrapped up their scoring less than two minutes later when Curry took a pass in the box and snuck it by the keeper and Tipp was in control 4-0 with 27:30 left.

The Red Devils have a week on the road as tonight Tipp travels to Xenia then make a trip to Cincinnati at noon Saturday for a non-conference match against Indian Hill.
