Tipp wins Greenville Invite to open the golf season
It was the perfect way for the Tipp boys golf team to open the season as they traveled to Turtle Creek Golf Course in Greenville to compete in the Green Wave’s Invitational. The Red Devils finished with a 311 to capture the championship, two strokes better than runner-up and huge league foe Vandalia Butler.
“They definitely stepped up, shooting a 311 in the first match of the season. That is a good score,” Tipp coach Aaron Jackson said. “Turtle Creek is a tough course and we always start on the hardest holes, and this year it was a good thing. Sometimes you get that confidence from having the good holes behind you.”
Max Gustavson led Tipp with a 74, which tied him for medalist honors before falling into a tiebreaker.
“For the tiebreaker, they went to the hardest holes to see what score they had, and they went to the third hardest hole, and Max had a par, and the other guy had a birdie,” Jackson said. “It was an excellent opener for him. It was his best finish, and it was a great field.”
Eli Voisard placed third with a 75, one shot behind the leaders.
“He will tell you there are a couple of shots he would love to have back,” Jackson said. “We expect him to be there all year for us, and even when he doesn’t have a great round, he will still put up a good score.”
The third top score for the Red Devils was Sam Dilworth, with an 80.
“He was solid all day,” the Tipp coach said. “He would miss a couple of putts, and then he would come back with a great approach shot and sink an easy putt. It was a good grind for him all day.”
Trey Bottles finished with an 82 in his first varsity season for Tipp, Carson Jackson had an 84 after a year off and Andrea Gagnon finished with an 87.
*The Tipp girls golf team also was victorious in their opening match of the season, earning their third straight win at the National Trail Invitational. Tipp shot 391 to outdistance Butler, who took home second overall.
Scores for Tippecanoe were Ella Berning with 83, Olivia Kreusch 87, Kylee Schreiner 110, Ava Hanrahan 110, Bristol Kovaleski 111, and Mya Schreiner 125.
Also last week, Tipp won the Covington Invitational with a 361, cruising to the easy team title.
Kreusch led Tipp with a 77, Berning carded an 84, Hanrahan and Kylee Schreiner each shot 100, Bristol Kovaleski finished with a 105, and Adelyn Deppen shot a 119.
