Lunch Break: Can’t Beat A Classic

Sampling dishes and diners in and around Miami County

Over the years, pizza and pizza restaurant trends have come and gone. Hot Honey, cheese in crust, barbecue, you name it, it’s probably been turned into a pizza place special. However, although adapting to the new waves of tasty pies, one thing is certain: Classic Pizza in Huber Heights has been making its pizzas the same old-fashioned way since its opening.

In the past, the small family-owned business made every pizza on their stove ovens, and possibly by following the method of “if it ain’t broke, don't fix it,” it seems as though the quaint little spot has become a Huber favorite. After taking a quick lunch trip, I found it to be one of my favorite spots, too.

The tiny pizza parlor is located inside a strip of local businesses and although the restaurant is small, the pies are absolutely mighty. The inside of the restaurant takes on a homey and vintage vibe. The car memorabilia, booths, and brick walls make the place feel as though you’ve taken a trip into a spot where only the cool kids from an ‘80s movie might hang after hours. I felt like I had just fallen onto the set of the Goonies or That Seventies show. The staff are also kind and quick to grab your order, with their convenient carryout and register counter adding to the vintage atmosphere.

Although I didn't order the “Classic Pizza,” I did order a pizza place classic and what looked to be one of the most fun items on the menu. One of the best parts of Classic Pizza is its tasty and affordable lunch specials. I ordered the sandwich combo, complete with a steak sub, groovy potato chips, and a side salad. The steak sub was a crispy Italian bread sandwich, perfectly made with a thick and juicy piece of steak, slathered in a zesty pizza sauce, topped with provolone, and my personal favorite, banana peppers. The fun pizza I ordered off of the menu might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly was mine. It was, of course, perfectly cooked in the old-fashioned stove oven and topped with crispy cheese and savory pickles. Don't knock it until you try it; pickle pizza might just be the new pepperoni, or at least it's up there for me now.

Classic Pizza is truly a place that lives up to its name. The pie parlor is classic, old-fashioned, and, in many ways, unbeatable. Next time I’m looking for a tasty pie and a blast from the past, Classic is where I’ll be.

Classic Pizza is located at 7129 Taylorsville Rd, Dayton (Huber Heights).
