Tipp volleyball off to fast start

The Tippecanoe Red Devils volleyball team finished a perfect first week of the season on Saturday with a three-set win over Eaton to finish the first week 3-0.

Tipp defeated the Eagles 25-17, 25-18, 25-10.

“We can look at the little things and forget about them,” Tipp coach Howard Garcia said. “We emphasize the unforced errors. Against Troy we were at 10 per set; today, we went down to four unforced errors per set. Every player is doing their job and it makes it much easier. You don’t have to rely on those ‘all-stars’ to be able to rely on, you can rely on everyone.”

Tipp was led by Savannah Clawson with ten kills and seven digs. Emily Aselage also had ten kills and 13 digs, while Courtney Post recorded five kills.

Lexi Luginbuhl and Mogan Sessions each had four kills on the day, with Faith Siefring adding 13 digs, Jenna Krim dishing out 13 assists with five aces, and Bri Morris passing out 17 assists.

*Tipp earned a straight set victory over league foe Troy last week, defeating the Trojans 25-9, 25-14, 25-18.

Clawson and Aselage each recorded eight kills, Jenna Krim added 15 assists while Faith Siefring had 15 digs. Bri Morris added eight assists while Emily Richardson dished out five assists.

“We had a better start under a great atmosphere, but it went out the window fast in our favor by holding Troy most of the night,” Garcia said. “They had some good moments, but our ball control and quick counter attacking was persistent.”

“I loved our effort on defense and how we set up the block, but our serving was aggressive but had too many errors (11 total). We are still getting into season shape, but I like how we are handling ourselves.”

*The Red Devils opened their season with a three-set win over Greenville, starting with a struggling 25-20 victory, before closing out the Green Wave 25-6, 25-14.

“We had a slow start in the first set due to inconsistencies in the block, but after settling down, the team took off with some outstanding blocking, consistent serve receive, and a lot of aggressive swings,” Garcia said. “I liked that the team adjusted and played under control and passion. It was a good start of the season.”

Clawson again led Tipp with 14 kills, four blocks and three aces along with 13 digs. Aselage finished with nine kills and ten digs. Morgan Sessions finished with four blocks while Krimm had ten assists, Richardson added eight while Siefring recorded 14 digs.
