Girls summer basketball was a success
Head coach Katie Roose and her team have been working throughout June. As far as the high school team goes, they played in the Troy Summer League on Monday nights. They also attended a one-day shootout at Tri-Village and played against four competitive teams.
Towards the end of the month, the varsity team attended the University of Findlay Women’s Basketball Team Camp. This was an overnight camp where they played four games on Thursday and three more on Friday, including a tournament.
In addition to playing basketball, the team set goals for the upcoming season and did team-building activities. They also hosted a few practices and open gyms throughout the month.
The high school girls also helped at Milton’s annual Youth Basketball Camp. They hosted two sessions: grades 1-4 in the morning and grades 5-8 in the afternoon. The camp lasted three days and had 46 campers combined. The high schoolers served as counselors and helped coach the younger girls.
The younger group focused more on the offensive skills of dribbling, passing, and shooting. The older girls spent one day focusing on offensive skills, one day on defensive skills, and the third day combining both skill sets for different activities. Both groups participated in individual skill competitions. These competitions included free-throw shooting, a Mikan drill, and a hot-shot competition. The high school girls also participated in the team competitions on the final day.
Overall, this camp is a success every year and gives the younger generation of Milton-Union athletes more insight into basketball. They are rewarded with new knowledge, prizes after the competitions, and even a T-shirt on the last day. The future is looking bright for not only the high school team but also the younger girls.
