Grazing Ground, a new urban farm, offers unique nature experiences
VANDALIA, OH — The Grazing Ground Dayton opened its doors on June 30, creating an urban farm devoted to goats, gardens, gluten free goods, and healthy living. Started by business owner Stacey Johnson, the development offers clients a variety of “goat experiences” and will soon include a small farmers market complete with baked treats.
“I just got tired of sitting at a desk every day, all day long,” Johnson said. “I wanted to do something fulfilling.”
What started as a vision for a wedding venue quickly shifted when Johnson discovered goat yoga while on a trip to Charleston, South Carolina. With the addition of 14 chickens and a love of gardening, however, the concept only grew as time wore on.
Now, visitors can partake in Zumba lessons, yoga, snuggle sessions and more from licensed professionals contracted by Johnson. And, with an estimated 100 attendants at Grazing Ground Dayton’s opening celebration, the niche is already finding a market.
After only being open for a few weeks, Johnson noted she’s already filling up classes and independent sessions. This support is only fueling her vision for the future.
“To see people that have no connection to me, to my friends, to my family, … to see them come out and enjoy themselves and be engaged and [receive] all the positive feedback was just everything that I needed,” Johnson said. “I’m getting emotional even thinking about it.”
As Grazing Ground Dayton continues to grow, Johnson hopes to create a barn that will allow her business to function year-round. Additionally, she’s working on opening a farmer’s market later this summer, inviting locals to try her unique taste in gardening — at a business all her own.
