Civil War Dedication
On Sunday, May 19, the Elizabeth Township Historical Society and the Lost Creek Reserve and Agricultural Center had a grave dedication for three Civil War soldiers. They are buried at Knoop Cemetery. New markers were placed in front of a large crowd of around 150 people. Among the spectators were descendants of the soldiers who traveled from out of state to be present.
Pictured are some of the direct descendants dressed in period clothing as they placed the wreath on the grave. The men remembered and recognized were Eli Dye of 94th Regiment OVI, John Strong 16th regiment OVI and Charles Strong of the 4th OVI. There was a 21-gun salute and taps played by a bugler.
A contingent of Civil War re-enactors was present, giving onlookers a glimpse of what life was like in the past with a camp set up by the cemetery gates. A color guard marched ahead of a riderless horse for the event. Some of the earliest Miami County pioneers are buried at Knoop Cemetery. These local heroes are again honored with new grave markers to preserve a piece of history.
