Tipp Softball earns run rule win over Xenia

With the post season now underway, the Tippecanoe softball team looked to take some momentum into the sectional tournament. The Red Devils scored in every inning, including a nine-run second frame to defeat Xenia 15-5 last week at home.

Rylan Elms and Gracie Anderson each collected three hits in the win for Tipp, while Jaina Drum pitched the complete game allowing five unearned runs for the victory for the Red Devils.

“Reflecting on yesterday’s game, they definitely came out stronger than yesterday with the errors and their hitting was there,” said Tipp coach Skylar Daroda. “They came together today and executed.”

Things started fast for Tipp as Gracie Raiff led things off with a single, stole second and later came into score when Emily Aselage hit a sacrifice fly giving the Red Devils a quick 1-0 lead.

Xenia plated four runs in the second before Tipp exploded for the nine spot.

Anderson reached on an error, Abby Chaney walked and one out later Drum hit a fly ball that was errored bringing home both runs. Two walks later, Aselage scored a run with a fielder’s choice, Elms singled in Charlize McCormick, and Kyla Fry reached on another error allowing Aselage to score and give Tipp a 6-4 lead.

Anderson ripped a double to bring home two more runs and Shelton singled to right to score two more. When the dust settled, the Red Devils led 10-4 after two innings of play.

Xenia scored their final run of the game in the third, but Tipp wasn’t done. Raiff reached on an error and came around to score on the Xenia miscues. Another error and singles from Fry and Anderson pushed across the 12th run of the game and Tipp was in command. Raiff drove home a run with an error in the fourth, then in the fifth, the Red Devils walked off the victory with two runs.

“The lineup and order is helping with the girls getting the three hits tonight,” Daroda said of the big night from Elms and Anderson. “Else has been coming back with the bats and hitting away and working hard.”

*Also last week, Tipp defeated Stebbins 11-6 behind four hits from Chaney and three from McCormick. Stebbins led off the game with four runs, but a big six run fifth gave Tipp the lead for good and they cruised to the win.

Drum pitched the complete game giving up two earned runs and seven strikeouts.

*Butler knocked off Tipp 8-2 on Wednesday as the Red Devils could only muster four hits in the game including two from Raiff.

Elms took the loss pitching a complete game.

*It was Senior Night for the Red Devils as they defeated Graham 7-2. Gracie Anderson was honored as the lone senior for the Red Devils and on her night, she collected two hits with an RBI in the victory.

The Red Devils collected 12 hits as Raiff, McCormick and Fry all joined Anderson with two hits apiece.

Drum pitched the final five innings and picked up the win giving up one run.

*Butler came back and defeated Tipp for the second time 7-3 to close out the week. Raiff, McCormick, and Shelton all had two hits for the Red Devils.
