MU Bulldog Track athletes are breaking records

Over the last two weeks, many of the Milton-Union track athletes have begun to show up in their events, some breaking records.

A select few bulldogs competed at the Wayne Invitational. This meet hosts over 90 teams who bring athletes with exceptional talent. Junior Payton Mayfield secured spots in the 100 and 200-meter dash finals. In the 100, he placed 13th out of 73 runners with a time of 11.17 seconds, and in the 200 he placed 10th out of 69 with a time of 22.63. But it doesn’t just stop at the running. Mayfield placed an impressive 18th out of 48 long jumpers, even while jumping short of his personal best.

As freshmen, Colin Hinkelman and Zak Klepinger ran impressive 2-mile times and both crushed their previous personal bests. Hinkelman ran a 10:11.56, finishing him 25 out of 51, and Klepinger ran 10:40.19, which finished him 41 out of 51.

On the girls' side at the Wayne Invitational, Jenna Brumbaugh had an impressive night placing 9th out of 42 in the 400-meter dash, 8th out of 41 in the long jump (which found herself on the podium as well as with a new personal best jump), and being a part of a record-breaking relay team (which we will cover soon). Savanna Smith finished 10th out of 34 in the 1600-meter run, and Morgan Quesinberry placed 12th out of 42 in the 300-meter hurdles, bypassing her previous best by 2 seconds and now is only a second off the school record.

But the most exciting part of the meet for these girls was breaking Milton-Union's Distance Medley Relay record. The team consisted of Ty Parsons, who started the race off running 1200 meters, followed by Quesinberry who ran 400 meters, then Brumbaugh who ran 800 meters, and they finished the race off with Smith running the 1600. The girls placed 7th overall (which placed them on the podium) and broke the previous record by over a minute.

As for more records being broken, at the Covington Invitational a week later, Mayfield broke two school records! First, in the 100-meter dash, he broke it by running an impressive 11.12 in rainy conditions. Following that, he broke his own school record in the 200-meter dash, running a new time of 22.06. A huge congratulations to him!
