Record-setting sectionals for Tipp tennis
All seven netters head to districts
For the first time in school history, all seven of Tippecanoe boys tennis players have qualified for the district tournament this week in Mason after surviving the sectionals last week at Troy High School.
Playing in the singles for Tipp were Alex Darner, Deacon Blake, and Ty Hoover, with all of them advancing to the final four at sectionals, which automatically qualified them for the districts. Also advancing with strong performances last week were the Tipp doubles teams of Nick Von Krosigk and Cam Davis at one spot, while also teaming up for doubles play was the usual combo of Roman List and Grant Vonderheide.
“It was a historic day for Tipp boys tennis today,” Tipp coach Kaci Matthews said after the first day of the tournament. “We also had Cam Davis reach his 100th career wins and, from the records I have, he is the first player to reach 100 career wins in school history. Pretty special day and really proud of Cam and all the boys how they battled today.”
“We had a saying all year that we are going to go on business trips and we have been on a mission and the boys took care of business. They fought really hard through some mental challenges and the heat. I am super proud of these guys.”
“They do it not only for themselves, but their teammates also.”
*In the sectional finals on Friday night, Von Krosigk and Davis won the doubles championship, defeating Vonderheide and List in the finals.
Darner lost in the singles championship to #1 seed Kyle Penny from Troy in a third-set tiebreaker. Also, Hoover placed third and Blake fourth overall.
The Boys Division One Districts will be held Thursday and Saturday, with the top qualifiers advancing to the state tournament next weekend.
*Also last week, the Red Devils earned a 5-0 win against Milton in the Battle of 571 to close out the regular season.
“It was a great competitive and fun match,” Matthews said. “Both teams played their sectional line-ups tonight to prepare for the Sectional tennis tournament.”
At first singles, Darner competed against Tommy Ryerson and earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory, while Hoover played second singles, defeating Tyler Combs 6-2, 6-0. Also winning for Tipp was the third singles player Blake as he knocked off Brock Hammond 6-0, 6-3.
Combining to play doubles for Tipp was Von Krogisk and Davis, and they defeated Levi Brumbaugh and Ben Iddings 5-7, 6-5, 7-5. Vonderheide and List had a tough battle with Titus Copp and Braden Schaurer before earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
