Tipp struggles continue, fall to Indians 5-1

It was the fourth straight loss for the Tippecanoe baseball team, falling 5-1 at home on Senior Night to the Piqua Indians, as the Red Devils closed out the regular season last week. It is a new season beginning now with the sectional baseball tournament with Tipp hosting a first-round game tomorrow night.

“We had a good idea that Hunter was going to throw and he is a really good pitcher, he is around the zone a lot,” said Tipp coach Cameron Dickens. “It is the same story that it has been all season for us, we have struggled to get any offense going. We got some guys on early and we didn’t cash in.”

Preston Zumwalt led off the bottom of the first with a single but was caught in a double play to end the early threat for Tipp.

Piqua came back in the second with their threat by loading the bases when Zander Mason singled to drive in the lead runner, but a great play at the plate from Brady Lisky tagged out the second runner trying to score, keeping the Tipp deficit at 1-0.

It was a scoring third inning that tied the game for the Red Devils. Drew Husic singled with one out, then later Jaxon Hill walked and Lisky singled to drive in the tying run.

The Indians regained the lead in the fourth when Josh Heath doubled in a run before Mason made it 4-1 with a single.

Piqua capped off the scoring in the fifth with a bases-loaded single.

Zumwalt led Tipp with two hits, but the team only could collect five hits.

McKinney pitched four and two-third innings, allowing four earned runs.

*Tipp closed out the regular season with a huge 14-0 win at Stebbins, breaking their losing streak heading into the sectional tournament this week.

Zumwalt led Tipp with a pair of hits and three RBIs, including a double and triple. Lisky also collected two hits with a pair of runs batted in. Peyton Schultz had a pair of hits and pitched a gem on the mound.

The Red Devils now host their first tournament game Thursday at 5 p.m. against the winner of the Franklin/Wilmington game, which was played after deadline Monday.
