Tipp places third at Red Devil invite
It was their annual Tippecanoe Red Devil wrestling Invitational last weekend at the high school. The host Tipp squad had a very solid day among the 17 teams who were in attendance.
Tipp placed third overall with 173 points, behind Miami East and Hamilton who comfortably finished in the top two spots on the day.
The Red Devils saw two wrestlers finish as individual champions in their weight class, with two others completing their day as runner-up.
165-pound Collin Isaac and 150-pounder Raiden Nicholls both brought home titles after a successful day. Finishing as runner-up for Tipp were 190-pound grappler Riley Nicholls and 144-pounder Trent Thompson.
The day started for Tipp as 106-pounder Trace Frazier finished third in his pool. He won two matches against John Cahill of Oakwood in 49 seconds and Evan Hurd of Wayne in 42 seconds. But his two losses placed him third and did not allow him to compete in bracket play.
At 120, Tipp’s Riley Hull won his pool to head into bracket play. He lost to Spencer Shore of Miami East in 1:17 before dropping into the third-place match, where he earned a 15-0 win against Colten Doggett of Tecumseh.
Rohan Nicholls won his 126-pound weight class pool. He then won his opening match in bracket play in 1:03 against teammate Parker Stuchell in 1:03 but was knocked off by Carter Deppe of Lima Bath 21-10. Nicholls then dominated Zach Wright of Dixie in 50 seconds to place third overall.
At 132 pounds, Eli Stacey lost both of his pool matches for Tipp, then at 144, Thompson went to work.
The Tipp junior went 3-0 in pool play and won his opening bracket match 17-1 over Evan Hewitt of Piqua to advance to the finals. He then lost to Riggins Hansgen of Miami East in 2:47.
Wrestling at 150 for Tipp was Nicholls, and he dominated his pool to advance to the bracket play. There, he had no troubles with Gabe Cole of Miami East 18-3, and in the finals, he took care of Emmett Humphrey of Fairborn 15-0.
Also winning his 165-weight class was Isaac, as the Tipp wrestler was not challenged all day. Winning his three pool matches, he then defeated Gavin Stanley of Kenton Ridge 16-0 and pinned John Kemp of Miami East in 1:29.
Weighing in at 175 was Cade Frazier who went perfect in his pool matches to advance into bracket play. He was then pinned by KJ Guston of Miami East before falling into the third-place match where he fell short to Jayden Kincer of Dixie 10-8.
At 190, Riley Nicholls placed second overall, falling in the finals by default. Nicholls wasn’t challenged in the pool play with two pins and earned an 18-0 win to advance to the finals.
Finally, at 285, Tipp freshman Brian Lomeli finished third in his pool and did not advance to bracket play.
