With the girls basketball season starting Friday night, three of the area’s teams will be a part of the 4 Decade Tip Off Classic held at Vandalia Butler High School this weekend.

Tippecanoe, Milton Union, and Butler will all be playing their opening games in this event. Twelve games will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Student Activity Center with the event being held to celebrate the long history of girls basketball in the Dayton area.

The Red Devils, coming off a 16-8 season, will return five of their top seven scorers from last year, including leading scorer Courtney Post at 10.5 points and nearly six rebounds per game. They will battle Mississinawa Valley at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Blackhawks bring back Taylee Woodbury, who averaged 15.0 points per game last season and received numerous honors.

Playing in the Classic opener on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. will be Milton Union as they battle an old SWBL foe Oakwood. The Bulldogs bring back the Three Rivers Conference Player of the Year, Jenna Brumbaugh. Oakwood boasts one of the area’s top shooters Ashley Bowden.

Finally, in the final game on Saturday, the host Butler Aviators battle Brookville. Butler comes off of an MVL North championship last season. They have senior guard Noel Smith leading the way and being counted on for big leadership. Brookville has a talented group, including freshman Jolie Gudorf.

*A charity silent auction will also be held over the weekend at the event. The proceeds go to the family of Versailles student athlete Brooke Bergman, who was involved in a very serious car accident in the fall and just now returned home. There will be a variety of items available to bid on, including rounds of golf, a Milwaukee high-impact blower kit, four tickets to Diamond Rio with dinner GC, a Dayton Flyer jersey signed by former Flyer Justine Raterman, several gift baskets, and a gift card tree, along with two tickets to a Dayton Flyers mens basketball game in February to the SOLD OUT UD Arena.

There will also be several autographed items available for bidding that would look good in the mancave, including ones from former Versailles grad and San Diego Padres pitcher Craig Stammen. Also signed memorabilia from the late coach Bob Knight, Jose Rijo, Kiefer Sutherland, NHL Hall of Famer Mark Recchi, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Daryl Hall, LPGA Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam, and a jersey from the Superbowl hero last season, Mecole Hardman from the Chiefs.

*The event looks back at the history of the sport in the Miami Valley. Several former players and coaches being introduced at halftime of various games to recognize them for their help in the growth of women's basketball.

Former Tippecanoe girls basketball Hall of Fame coach Tom Rettig will be recognized at halftime of the Tipp game Saturday. Former Lehman Catholic all-state basketball standout Denise Demange, the mother of Brooke, Ashley and Emily Aselage from Tippecanoe will also be recognized. Current Tipp Middle School AD Kaci Matthews will be introduced at halftime of the Milton Union game on Saturday morning. She is the all-time leading scorer in Milton Union basketball history.

Vandalia Butler 2010 grad Kacie Cassell will be coming back for the halftime of the Butler game Saturday night, along with her dad Jeff, a very successful coach at Franklin Monroe in the 1990s.

Other notable people being recognized throughout the weekend (along with their game) include retired LPGA golfer Victoria Elizabeth (MU v Oakwood), Indiana Fever assistant GM Hillary Spears (Versailles v Bellbrook), former Covington basketball legend Lynnette Roeth (Tipp vs Mississinawa) and the premier basketball trainer in the country Jimmy Clayton, who also worked with Michael Jordan during his career (Tipp v Mississinawa).

In the final game on Sunday, it will be CJ vs Beavercreek with several former players and coaches returning from their iconic rivalry in the late 1990s including Alison Bales, Brandie Hoskins, Lindsay Goldsberry, Amanda Reese, Stef Miller along with the all-time winningest coach in Ohio history Ed Zink from Beavercreek and former Tipp coach Frank Goldsberry, who was at CJ during their run. Andrea Hoover and Ally Mallot are both expected to return for this game, meaning four former WNBA players will be recognized.

Tickets are $10 each day, which allows you to stay for games all day.
