Time to wrap up the Tippecanoe 2012 spring season.

No better place to start than the state track meet held June 2. Kudos to Red Devil juniors Sam Wharton and Grant Koch for their Division I state performance at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

To set the record straight, Wharton posted a personal best time 9:01.22, fast enough for second place in the 3200M. His running time was incorrectly stated in the June 6 issue of the Gazette.

Wharton's goal is to break the 9-minute mark next season in the 3200M Koch placed sixth in the 800M in a personal best time of 1:55.24 and hopes to cut at least three seconds off his time next season.

Five Red Devil girls competed in the D-I regional two weeks ago at Welcome Stadium in Dayton. Although they did not qualify for the state meet, the quintet posted times that just missed the four state qualifying spots.

The five girls included relay sprinters Ashley Badertscher, Allison Rawlins, Sarah Janosik, Ellise Sharpe and Erica Comer, who also competed in the 400M.

Turning to the diamond, the Tippecanoe baseball and softball teams finished their respective seasons with 20-plus-win seasons.

Coached by Bruce Cahill, who enters his 30th year at the helm next season, the 2012 edition of the baseball squad posted a record of 25-9. The squad put together the longest run in school history by advancing to the Division II regional semifinal against Wyoming. A 3-2 loss to the Cowboys could not put a damper on an outstanding season.

Moreover, junior pitcher Carter Langdon, who missed his entire sophomore season due to a knee injury, recorded a 10-1 mark on the mound. His pitching and hitting earned Langdon a spot on the D-II All-Ohio second team.

Meanwhile, the softball team had a roller coaster season on offense and defense but still managed to finish with a 21-7 mark. The team had a 2-2 mark during its pre-season trip to Alabama. The squad won 19 more games and lost five, including a 4-1 decision to Ben Logan in the D-II sectional final.

Seniors CC Alvarez, Alex Dawes and Darlene Reinhard had outstanding Red Devil careers. Alvarez and Dawes are playing at the next level as both signed for college ball. Alvarez signed with Southeastern Iowa Community College and Dawes signed with Marshall Universit6y in Huntington.

Coach Charles Tackett is counting on a dozen varsity players and several junior varsity players to compete for starting positions next season.

Turning to tennis, the Red Devils coached by Von Clendenen competed in Division I for the first time in school history. Undaunted, the squad won another Central Buckeye Conference title on its way to an outstanding 19-1 mark.

Junior first singles player Sam Bollinger advanced to the district but dropped a first-round match.

His goal is to advance to state next season.

Second singled player Michael Keller finished his freshman year with a splendid mark of 19-1.

His only lost was in the sectional. Third singles player Jacob Belcher finished his sophomore season with a 17-3 mark.

The Tippecanoe fall season gets a head start with summer workouts and conditioning. That means football, volleyball, soccer and cross country seasons are less than three months away.
