A Tipp City man wanted by Miami County for nearly a year for his alleged role in a drug ring investigation said brought large amounts of heroin and methamphetamines into the Miami Valley was arrested in Florida after he called police to report someone stole $10,000 from him.
Hugo Avendano, 32, was arrested in Pasco County, Florida, on July 15 after deputies checking his identification discovered warrants from Miami County for alleged multiple drug trafficking charges.
Sheriff Dave Duchak said Friday, July 21, Avendano – one of four people still being sought in the drug investigation – called the Florida sheriff’s office to report $10,000 cash had been stolen from his vehicle.
Avendano is fighting extradiction to Ohio. Duchak said investigators would be working with local prosecutors to pursue the legal process needed to return him to Ohio to face the charges.
Avendano was indicted in August 2016 by a Miami County grand jury along with seven others. He faces charges including engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, drug trafficking and money laundering.
Those arrested in the case last year were: Mario Segura, 33, of Tipp City; Aleesha Segura White, 22 of Tipp City; Jose Barjas, 34, of Huber Heights and Dayton; and Erick Segura of Tipp City. They pleaded to charges in deals with prosecutors this year and have been sentenced.
Erick Segura was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while three years in prison was ordered for Mario Segura and Jose Barajas. Aleesha Segura White was sentenced to five years of community control.
Local detectives and the U.S. Marshal’s Service are working to locate the remaining suspects. They are: Dora Avendano, 37, formerly of Tipp City; Ricardo Mondragon, 26, formerly of Dayton; and Jose Galvin, 32, formerly of New Carlisle.
Duchak said investigators believe Dora Avendano is in Texas and the other two still at large in Mexico.
